Simple, smoky and packed with flavour, this grilled avocado with ponzu is a quick side that works beautifully on both a Konro or Asado grill. Grilling enhances the avocado's natural richness while adding a subtle smoky depth. Finished with a bright ponzu dressing, spring onion and toasted sesame seeds, it's a fresh and flavourful accompaniment to seafood, steaks or vegetables.

Ingredients
- 2 ripe but firm avocados
- 2 tbsp ponzu sauce
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 spring onion, finely sliced
- 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
- Pinch of chilli flakes (optional)
Method
1. Prepare the Grill
Light your charcoal and allow it to come up to temperature. Set up your grill for direct high-heat cooking.
2. Prepare the Avocados
Cut the avocados in half lengthways and remove the stones.
3. Oil the Cut Surface
Lightly brush the cut side of each avocado half with sesame oil to help prevent sticking and encourage caramelisation.
4. Place on the Grill
Position the avocado halves cut-side down directly over the hottest part of the grill.
5. Char the Avocados
Cook for 2–3 minutes until grill marks develop and the surface takes on a light char.
6. Remove and Dress
Transfer the avocados to a serving platter and spoon over the ponzu sauce while still warm.
7. Finish and Serve
Scatter over the sliced spring onion, toasted sesame seeds and chilli flakes, if using. Serve immediately.
