Whether it's your first time using your grill or you’ve just carried out your deep clean routine, seasoning your grill is crucial. It's not just a one-time process, it should be done at least every four months, this allows your grill to maintain optimal performance. Seasoning prevents food from sticking, reduces rust, minimises debris build-up, and extends the life of your grates. Properly seasoning your grill ensures better cooking results and easier cleaning. Here’s how to do it step-by-step.

Step 1: Clean Your Grill

Before you begin the seasoning process, ensure your grill is clean. If this is your first time using the grill, remove any protective coatings and wash it with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry. If you are conducting this after a few months of use, check out our How to Deep Clean your Asado Grill for more information.

Step 2: Preheat the Grill

Once your grill is clean and dry, it's time to add some heat. Light your grill - see How To Light your Grill for more information. Once you have got a fire going, close the lid and allow the grill to heat up to around 150-175°C. This will help to burn off any remaining residue from manufacturing or previous use.

Step 3: Oil the Grates

After the grill has preheated, open the lid and allow it to cool slightly. While still warm, use a grill brush to remove any loose debris from the grates. Then, take a paper towel or cloth, and dip it in a high smoke point oil such as vegetable or rapeseed oil. Using tongs, rub the oil-soaked towel over the grill grates, coating them thoroughly. Be sure to cover all surfaces of the grates.

Step 4: Heat the Grill Again

Stoke the fire back up and allow the grill to heat up to around 200-230°C. Close the lid and let the oil bake into the grates for about 15-20 minutes.

Step 5: Repeat the Oiling Process

For best results, repeat the oiling process 2-3 times. This will ensure a strong, non-stick coating on your grates, making future grilling sessions easier.

Step 6: Regular Maintenance

To maintain the seasoning on your grates, lightly oil them after each use. After cooking and while the grill is still warm, brush the grates clean and apply a light coat of oil. This will keep the grates in good condition and ready for your next grilling session.

Final Tips

  • Use High Smoke Point Oils: Always use oils with high smoke points for seasoning, as they won't burn off at high temperatures and will create a better protective layer.
  • Avoid Non-Stick Sprays: Avoid using non-stick sprays or oils with additives, as they can leave a sticky residue on your grates.
  • Stay Consistent: Consistency is key. Regularly seasoning your grill will keep it in top condition and make your grilling experiences much more enjoyable.
